VX One National Championship at Weymouth Sailing Club

by VX One Class Association 31 Jul 2019 01:09 AEST 19-21 July 2019

Weymouth SC set in the bustling Weymouth harbour were the excellent hosts of the 2019 Championship.

Getting the beamy VX Ones down the narrow winding lane to the club yard was the first hurdle for all competitors to overcome! Thirteen VX Ones complete this challenge - travelling from as far afield as Largs, Dumfries and Tynemouth. Great to see six boats travel from Ullswater YC for this regatta.

The first two days were very similar expect for the addition of wall to wall sunshine rather than rain for the second day. South westerly winds of 20-28 knots gave all sailors a challenge on the upwind leg and some spectacular sleigh rides downwind - both of these days will be talked about for years to come! The majority of sailors hit 20 knots downwind - the photos shows an equal amount of grins and concentration! Saturday was a perfect day for the photographer Tim Olin to arrive - we're sure it'll be his best day of photography for the season.

The results were as steady as the breeze, Jono Shelley and his team of Chris Blackburn & Clare Molloy reeled off six first places on the trot. Just behind them with 6 seconds places was experienced 505 sailor Christian Diebitsch helming with Nathan Batchelor & Ollie Fellows. These 2 teams were a click smoother, settled & faster in the strong breezes to eek out a lead by the end of the races.

The final day brought more sunshine and lighter winds - 10 knots from the west. Diebitsch and team won race 7 with Shelley 2nd, who then went in having won the regatta. The final race was lead from start to finish by Weymouth SC member Simon Hawkes & Paul Birbeck who had a great last day to rise to third overall. It was very close behind them with fourth to seventh place only separated by 6 points.

There is lots more VX One racing to go this season, with a Eurocup in Lake Garda in September, followed by Autumn Champs at Ullswater early October, rounded off with the Ovington Inlands at Grafham. There is limited charter boat availability still, along with new & used boats for sale - contact for more info.
