After spending a week battling challenging conditions on the waters of Sakaiminato City, Japan, Charlotte Rose (Houston, Texas) has secured ninth place overall at the 2019 Laser Radial World Championships.
In 2017 and 2018, Rose was the back-to-back Youth World Champion in the Girl's Laser Radial fleet. Her success in the boat at a young age seems to have prepared her well for this event. Rose managed to clinch ninth place after holding a top-ten position throughout the entire regatta.
All week, competitors battled shifty conditions on Miho Bay. The high degree of variance in wind velocity and direction makes Rose's consistent performance all the more impressive.
"It's great to see Charlotte so competitive among the world's best sailors," said US Sailing's Olympic Development Director, Leandro Spina. "Her success is a testament to the years of hard work she's put in that the Olympic Development Program has been pleased to support with coaching resources and opportunities to train alongside world-class athletes like Paige [Railey] and Erika [Reineke]."
Other strong American finishes include performances from two-time Olympian, Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.), and Trofeo Sofia Bronze Medalist, Erika Reineke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Railey finished the event in 12th overall and Reineke finished 21st.
The 2019 World Championships are the first events of the 2020 Olympic Trials for U.S. athletes. As the highest placing American Radial sailor, Rose leads selection by three finishing positions. Selection in the Laser Radial class will be determined at the 2020 Laser Radial World Championships. The event is scheduled for February 21-28, 2020 in Sandringham, Australia.
