Zeke and Jay Horowitz, sailing Flying Scot #6196, kept their winning ways taking two bullets in racing Wednesday in the Flying Scot North American Championship. The son/father team from Annapolis MD now has scores of 3-4-1-1 for nine points after four races.
Bragging rights and silver will be on the line in Thursday's single and final race of the Championship Series.
Tied for second place are Tyler and Carrie Andrews of Deer Park MD in Scot #6130 and the team of Fred Soward and Oliver Byington in Scot #5298 with 11 points each. Andrews has scores of 2-1-5-3 while Soward has 5-2-2-2.
In the Challenger Series, scores are not so tight. Steve and Renee Comen of Dallas TX in Scot #6090 hold a seemingly comfortable lead with nine points after scores of 1-2-3-4. Rising to second place is the team of Bill Vogler of Cobden IL and Mark Schillebeeckx of St Louis MO with 6-1-1-3 and 11 points.
As he was getting his boat cleaned up after racing today, Jay Horowitz said that today was a "chamber of Commerce sailing day on Pensacola Bay."
Early in the morning the bay was glass and PRO Hal Smith ran the AP (postponement) flag up the pole. It wasn't long before it came down as the sea breeze came in quickly. The first warning for the day's first race was only 5 minutes later than the scheduled 12 noon time.
Two races were on the schedule and that's what the sailors got. Wind from 195º about 7 kts for the first race building to about 12 kts in the second.
Jay Horowitz hasn't raced in Pensacola before, but he has been here when his son raced as a youth. "This has been great," he said. "The club has been so hospitable. The Race committee has done a really good job of getting us fair courses and getting the races off just like they are supposed to."
"We are happy to be here," Horowitz added. "It is a really competitive fleet. We have had to work for the results."
Thursday racing begins at 12 noon again, but only one race is scheduled.
