Classic International 14 Open at Blakeney Sailing Club

by Edward Allen 10 Jul 2019 01:34 PDT 6-7 July 2019

The Classic International 14 fleet converged on Blakeney Harbour for the annual open meeting on 6/7th July. One entrant from Blakeney, one from the Wroxham, and Rickmansworth and two from Trent Valley at Nottingham. Blakeney didn't disappoint.

Day one, race one saw a force 5 dropping to 4, a cracking start and long beat all up the harbour and then a blast back. Chris and Nick Dunster K859 came in first followed by Edward Allen and Bertie Wykeham K943, Brian Willmott and Joe Plant K1136 followed very closely by Andy Hunter and Martin Gregory K1092.

Race 2 was won by K859, but retired having realised that they had missed a mark, as did K953 so Andy Hunter won with Brian Willmott 2nd. Sadly Ian Turfrey and Paul Hills, K885 did not start either race, the conditions were too much and also the main halyard gave up.

Day two saw glorious sunshine and a force 2-3 wind - Blakeney at its best. The Dunsters showed the fleet how to do it with two wins out of 2. The rest of the fleet, including K885 who had repaired the damage, swapped places constantly until in the final reckoning Andy Hunter came 2nd and Brian Willmott 3rd.

Great courses, a great patrol team, a great Race Officer in John Myers ably supported by Patsy Seymour, thank you so much for giving us such a fun demanding weekend.

Roll on next year, 14s are forever.

Michael Goffe - Farewell to a thinking sailor
One of the great post-war generation of sailing giants If the only metric to be applied when considering who would be on a list of our 'great' sailors was the number of major championships wins, then it is unlikely that the name of Michael Goffe, who died in the days after Christmas, would be highlighted.
