Midlands Champion Race at Draycote Water: Successful Summer Celebration of 50th Anniversary

by Ian Macwhinnie 26 Jun 2019 16:31 AEST 22 June 2019

Draycote Water SC celebrated its 50th anniversary in style with a day of competitive racing followed by an evening of revelry with food and dancing. The mid-summer highlight of the Club's golden anniversary took place in warm sunshine and light and fluky winds which kept all the sailors on their toes.

The three-race format to be crowned Midlands Champion started with two 40-minute average lap races in the morning followed by a 100-minute pursuit in the afternoon. The winner was Norman Byrd in a Phantom followed by Greg Irish, the 2018 Club champion, and Will Whittaker, both in Lasers.

First Lady in sixth place overall was Ellie Craig in an Aero 7, first Juniors were Alice Davis and Fergus Pye in seventh in a Feva XL, and first Master was Club Commodore, Jeremy Atkins, in a Solo, who was 5th overall.

It was encouraging to see a good turnout from the Club's Youth & Junior section, who showed concentration and stamina to complete all three races.

We are grateful to Lexus of Coventry for supplying a wide range of prizes not only for the winners in each category but also for raffle prizes for the racers.

The evening saw the clubhouse packed for an American barbecue and some energetic dancing to a Ceilidh band.
