International Canoe Week and UK Nationals at Plymouth - Overall

by Chris Hampe 19 Jun 2019 05:07 PDT 10-16 June 2019

Day 5 of Canoe Week would form the second day of the nationals and would eliminate several boats from the running at the front of the fleet with a South-Westerly wind blowing up to 27 knots.

One of the first casualties was Chris Hampe Who elected to return to shore to make repairs only to be timed out for the start of the first race. Robin Wood would dominate the race to win clearly ahead of Phil Robin and Alistair Warren.

For the second race of the day Alistair Warren, Phil Robin and Chris Hampe all broke clear, as many boats capsized on the first tack upwind. It was a closely fought battle throughout the race with the two Dragonfly designs of Warren and Robin faster upwind, While Hampe was faster offwind in his Morison 3 design where he was able to pass Robin for second place. This was how it was going to finish until Warren capsized on his final tack to the finish line. He was so close to the line that if the tide had been ebbing he would surly of drifted across the finish before Hampe could pass. With Hampe stealing the win Warren's 2nd place still meant he had the best score line of the day as other contenders posted inconsistent scores.

The sun finally shined for Saturday's showdown despite less wind then the previous two days, the sailors found they were still hiking at the end of their sliding seats. With three races scheduled in champagne conditions it was Robin Wood who was back on form winning the first 2 races. For the title contenders Alistair Warren was the most consistent scoring 3, 2, 1 ahead of Glen Truswell with a 4, 3, 2.

With conditions set to deteriorate on Sunday an early decision was made to cancel all races and finalise the results. This meant that for the Nationals the result would be decided with no discards while the Canoe Week results would be scored with a single discard.

This was meant that Alistair Warren was crowned National Champion from newcomer Glen Truswell with Phil Robin in third. While Dan Skinner led the Old boat prize. For Canoe Week the discard was enough to lift Chris Hampe into first place ahead of Glen Trussell and Phil Robin.
