Not quite the sunny start we had yesterday but judging by a few "red" people in the boat park it was a welcome relief. Another busy day at Hayling Island Sailing Club for the 200 boats sailing in the Whitsun Regatta, the competitors were greeted by 15 knots of South Westerly breeze, large waves and overcast sky.
Once again racing took place over 5 courses with Paul & Bronwyn Ridgeway continuing to dominate the Tasar National Championship with another 2 first places. Their perfect record was broken by local sailors Ian Swann & Graham Williamson who won race 4. Even more consistent in second place are Willem & Luna Schutte who continue their good form and now have six second places from six races. Funnily enough they are currently discarding a second place. Ian & Graham's win has lifted them into 3rd place overall. Final day of the National Championship will take place tomorrow.
With some long up wind legs against the tide, Nathan Batchelor & Richard Rigg from Tynemouth SC had a first and second today to win the Bulwark Trophy, overhauling the overnight leaders Andy McKee & Richard Jones from Dovestone SC who finished second. Winners of the Sprook trophy for highest placed from Hayling Island SC were Richard Lovering & Matt Alvarado in 3rd.
Colin Smith sailing Shaken Not Stirred with brother Paul & Anna Wells had a great day on the water winning race 3 to win overall. Climbing the rankings today with a win in race 4 were husband and wife, Paul & Caroline Fisk sailing with Richard Tucker from Burnham on Crouch to finish 2nd overall in Legs Eleven. Overnight leader Peter Copsey sailing with crew Trevor & Henry slipped to finish 3rd.
Tied on 5 points were Tom Morris & Elliott Wells and Luke & Emma McEwen from Royal Lymington SC with Tom & Elliott claiming the win on count back. Phil Walker & John Mather posted two consistent 3rd places to pip Mr & Mrs Partington into 3rd place.
Dan Vincent from Stokes Bay SC racing his Musto Skiff on level terms with the RS700s claimed the Regatta win with 2 first places today. Theo Galyer sailing a RS700 finished 2nd with Ian Nolan from Snettisham Beach SC in 3rd. Dan said "What a cracking weekend I will make sure all my mates from Stokes Bay are here next year. The club has done a fantastic job."
RS200s had a stunning Day 2 in the bay. The wind blew and the waves were big hiking, planing and surfing were the order of the day. The results came down to the last run of the last race with the battle royal between Matt & Emma Mee, Tom & Lucy Hewitson, Tommy & Charlie Darling. Tom & Lucy finally broke the Matt & Emma winning spree giving overall results of Matt & Emma 1st, Tom & Lucy 2nd and Tommie & Charlie 3rd.
Yesterday's dominance of the Fast Handicap Fleet by the National 18s was broken today by Mark Goodchild from Medway SC sailing his International Canoe to finish 1st overall counting three 1st places. Ollie Houseman & Jeremy Vines from Tamesis and Jessica & Hugo Berney sailing with Stephan Peritti from Blackwater SC finished 2nd and 3rd in their National 18s.
Neale Jones & Ed Fitzgerald continued their winning streak in the International 14's with another two 1st places to win from Archie Massey and Harvey Hillary. Hayling Island SC Vice Commodore Andrew Partington sailing with James Hughes finished 3rd.
In the Slow Handicap Fleet, overnight leader Dominic Hall in his Laser just managed to hold onto 1st place from Paul Childs sailing an OK and Jason Hardman in his RS Aero 7.
Stuart Godwin discarded a 1st place to win the Solo fleet with a perfect score from Nick Rawlings in 2nd and Richard Bailey in 3rd.
Carboteck boys Henry Jameson & Louis Johnson confirmed their place at the top of the 29er fleet. Ben Hutton-Penman claimed 2nd overall.
The Youth Regatta fleets, racing after the adults inside Chichester Harbour, had another great day's sailing. RS Teras were won by Benjamin Ripley with Charlie Baker 2nd and Oliver Thompson 3rd. Ben Stokes and Alex Baker continued their epic match race series with Ben edging the results. HISC's Anna Elms pipped Ned Coles from Emsworth Slipper SC to the post by the smallest of margins, not far behind was Isla Hoult in 3rd. Ben Tuttle & Will Balch claimed first place in the RS Feva fleet from Mark Jenkins-Jauma & Freddie Covell with Esther Tuttle & Maya Bergmann-Smith finishing a strong 3rd.
Andy Partington Vice Commodore Sailing said "The Hayling Island Sailing Club Whitsun Regatta was exactly what we wanted it to be, a great success! We want it to be the must-do dinghy and keelboat Regatta in the UK with the Best Regatta Tea, of course!" Andy was very grateful for the huge volunteer effort both on and off the water from the club members and Search and Rescue Charity Serve On. Combined with the magnificent contribution from the club Crew, the Whitsun Regatta will go down as a hit with all competitors. We are extremely grateful for the invaluable support from event sponsors GJW Direct. We can't wait for next year!
