Noble Marine Supernova Travellers at Bough Beech Sailing Club

by Ellen Clancy 15 Apr 2019 03:57 PDT 6 April 2019

The only Supernova Traveller Series event South of London takes place at Bough Beech, 250 acres of water, set in the attractive and picturesque North West Kent countryside.

The modest turn out of 11 Supernovas was one more boat than last year with 7 visitors joining 4 club boats. The event was Multi-class with Streakers and Finns making for a Regatta spectacle more befitting the large sailing area and first class facilities.

Although the forecast was for a force 3 North-Easterly gusting force 4, it was at times either windier or less windy than the forecast. As is often the case when the less usual Northerly winds cut across this 250 acre reservoir, there were plenty of wind shifts to test the skill of the helms.

The meeting was shared with the Streaker and Finn classes and given the wind strength and length of course, the fleets were kept reasonably apart from each other.

Whilst the meeting winner showed absolute consistency with three first places, amongst the rest of the fleet there was plenty of place changing between laps and individual race results throughout the day. The only exception was Tony Bleasdale, from Girton Sailing Club, who was third in every race.

This was almost the first time in a Supernova for the overall winner, John Reed, from Bough Beech Sailing club, who was sailing a borrowed home club boat. Congratulations are in order for his successful negotiation of a very steep learning curve supported (presumably) by the benefit of many years sailing a variety of other dinghy classes at Bough Beech!

Another Bough Beech member (Martin Burgess) found his best form in the last race, liking the stronger but steadier winds, and took second place and second overall.

There was a tie for third and fourth places with Gary Butterfield, from Bartley Sailing Club, beating Tony Bleasdale on the tie-break.

After some consistent sailing, Ian Casewell of Cotswold Sailing Club was awarded the Veteran's prize.

Following the prize giving, a number of the competitors set off for the Bartley Sailing Club Open Meeting which was being held the following day.
