The 50th Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia Iberostar Regatta (Trofeo Sofia) has concluded, following Saturday's medal races. In breezy conditions, three U.S. athletes secured a spot on the podium. Laser sailor, Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif.), earned his first major title and will take home the gold medal. Pedro Pascual (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Erika Reineke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also earned spots on the podium. Both athletes clinched the bronze medal in their respective classes. Athletes Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) also appeared in medal races today, finishing in 5th and 6th place, respectively.

For U.S. sailors, this regatta was the second of two selection events for the 2019 Olympic Test Event. The event will be held at the Olympic venue, The Enoshima Yacht Harbour, August 17-22. Selection is aggregated over results from Trofeo Sofia and the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami.

Despite an impressive performance this week, Barnard misses out on U.S. selection to the Olympic Test Event to Buckingham but was pleased to round out his regatta with the win. "I'm extremely happy, relieved, and emotionally exhausted," grinned Barnard. "This is by far the biggest regatta I've won. I've been happy with the way I've sailed all week and today I showed a really good fight. That's probably what I'm most proud of."

"Charlie will go to the test event. For myself I'm disappointed with Miami, I didn't finish very well. I did everything I needed to do here to have a good result, but Charlie earned that spot. He sailed two really consistent events. So, I will work hard to keep on improving and focus on our Olympic Trials."
