The sailing season at Keyhaven Yacht Club could not have asked for a more inviting start, under clear blue skies with a slightly shifty north-westerly, racing in the Solent for 2019 got under way last Sunday.

Race one kicked off with a close encounter between two boats as an over eager Sanderson (Hadron H2) saw fit to nudge the transom of Lee (Laser) on the line earning himself a penalty turn for the indiscretion and enabling Lee to head the charge to up to the windward mark leaving Sanderson chasing the fleet. Unfazed by this hiccough however, Sanderson easily climbed back up the places reading the shifty conditions perfectly and eventually taking the race, followed in by Jardine (Laser) and Langley (Laser).

The second race got away with a clean start for all, led initially by Beggs (Blaze) but ultimately played out much like the first, with Sanderson, Jardine and Langley taking the top three spots once more. Star sailor of the day was David Bence; fairly new to racing, he performed well after conservative starts, working his way past Turner (Laser 2000) in both races and made excellent work of the light and shifty conditions.

After all the fun in the Solent, the sailors then made their way back to the Club House to join the throng of other members who had ventured down to make the most of the beautiful weather in the lovely club garden by the creek.
