Taiwan's sailors put on a dominating performance to capture several medals in a never-before-seen result for Chinese Taipei at Hong Kong Race Week, which took place from February 12-17, 2019 in waters off the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Middle Island.

The sailors bested peers from all over Asia, including Hong Kong, India, China, Macau, and Guam. The event is positioned as "a constituent event" of the ASAF (Asian Sailing Federation) Youth Cup.

Two podium finishes came apiece to Taiwan's Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 sailors. Daniel Hsiu Chu Huang barely skipped a beat and finished the four-day regatta with five bullets to triumph over his closest rival Stan Picard, who flew the HKG sail in the Laser Radial division. Daniel's compatriot, Andrea Cheng Ling Feng, put on a strong showing herself to come in fourth in the 13 person fleet. In the Laser 4.7 division, Wu Chi-Yu captured 3rd place; fellow sailor Yu Lin -Yang came in fourth; and Ching Ping Chen finished 15th The 4.7 sailors were competing in a fleet with 33 boats.

Meanwhile in the Optimist fleet, Taiwan sailor Lin Yuanchun narrowly missed a fifth place overall podium finish to come in sixth overall (third boy); with three of his fellow sailors, Chiang Hsiang Hui placing 13th overall and sixth girl; Chien Tsaitien coming in 15th overall and seventh girl; and Huang Wei-Chen finishing in 20th in a fleet with 88 sailors. The podium finishes came after four days of varying wind conditions which saw winds of up to 25 knots.

"Sailing requires several factors: the skill level of the sailors themselves as well as the experience that they can get when competing abroad. We are proud of them regardless, but are especially excited that they have been able to get results in an important event like this one," said Association President Chen Shuang Chuan. "We laud the efforts of both the coaches and the sailors and thank them for making us proud."

"In this past, we have worked hard to raise our standards, and now we are beginning to see the results of these efforts. We hope we are able to continue on this path, and that our sailors are able to make their mark on sailing as a whole." said Association Secretary General Yeh Hui Wen.
