Disabled sailors will get new opportunities to speed around South Wales waters thanks to Swansea Watersports being awarded status as an RYA Sailability Centre.

They have a particular emphasis on disabled sailors being able to go powerboating, but there are ambitions to extend the scope with a bigger boat and eventually moving into sailing.

Swansea Watersports is a family run business which has been going for more than 10 years, based in Swansea Marina.

Sailability is the RYA's national programme enabling people with disabilities to try sailing and take part on a regular basis. Becoming a Sailability Centre means reaching high standards of accessibility and safety for sailors of all abilities.

By becoming a Sailability Centre, Swansea Watersports have proved high standards in safety and sailing expertise, with programmes running under RYA qualified coaches.

In particular we are looking to offer Powerability," explained Ceri Davies, Swansea Watersports managing director. "Powerboating is our passion, we have got boats available and feel it is important that people of all abilities can access them.

"At the moment there are only certain elements we can cater for, but we are looking into getting a new boat that can be adapted, make the sport even more inclusive. We are looking forward to give as many people as possible the opportunity to go powerboating.

Pete Muskett, South Wales development officer for RYA Cymru Wales, added, "It is always great to be able to extend the opportunities for people of all abilities to go sailing.

"By becoming a Sailability Centre, Swansea Watersports have proved high standards in safety and sailing expertise, with programmes running under RYA qualified coaches."
