Second to none downwind blast, tropical, sunshine, 30-degree water temperature and 20 to 30 knot breeze, the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race should be on every sailor's bucket list.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has released the Notice of Race and opened entry for the 9th edition of the biennial Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. The race starts on 16 October 2019 and will take competitors on a 673nm epic downwind ride from Hong Kong to the Asian paradise of Nha Trang, Vietnam.

The 2017 edition of the Race had a slew of international entries with boats hailing from Great Britain, Italy, China, Russia, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. That Race was won by Cookson 50 Mascalzone Latino with the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race winner Phillip Turner’s and Duncan Hine’s Reichel / Pugh 66 Alive from Australia taking Line Honours.

Mascalzone Latino skipper Vincenzo Onorato loved his first Hong Kong to Vietnam Race and on arrival into Nha Trang said, “It was amazing because we did the race in 53h 26m 31s and we did around 770nm actual distance sailed - unbelievable! The biggest high - we had a top speed of 30kts; unbelievable.”

Even with the ideal conditions in the last edition, the 2015 race record still stands at an impressive 42h 17m 24s and was set by legendary yachtsman Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin 100 shortly before his retirement from his yachting career which spanned more than 55 years.

The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is recognised as a qualifying race for the 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
