Detroit Cup added as 11th event in Match Race Super League 2019

The Bayview Yacht Club, organizers of the Detroit Cup, a grade 2 event with a 12 year history in match racing has joined the Match Race Super League 2019, making it 11 events worldwide on the League.
The Match Race Super League is pleased to announce that the International Match Race for the DETROIT CUP has been added as the sixth stop on the 2019 League season schedule.
The event, organized by the Bayview Yacht Club (BYC) and supported by the City of Detroit, will be held over 21-25 August 2019.
"We're very pleased to have this traditional event in Detroit (USA)," said League Director Eberhard Magg. "The event has a long history of excellence at ISAF Grade 2 level, and has always attracted strong interest as one of the US Grand Slam events. This is a perfect match for it to be on the League."
Lance Smotherman, from the OA said, "The Detroit Cup has always been the significant International event held in the Mid West for the past 12 years, and we see the MRSL as a perfect partner to promote International participation".
"The Detroit Cup is the longest running Grade 2 match race held annually in the midwest. We have always championed MONOHULL match racing, and the Detroit Cup has attracted the best from around the world to come to the Great Lakes and compete in the past and will do in the future. The Detroit Cup, being one of the four Grand Slam events is a qualifier for the Con Cup, celebrating it's 55th anniversary in 2019."
Smotherman adds:"Twelve teams will race in 10 equally-matched Ultimate 20 type boats. Bayview Yacht Club is the shrine of nautical culture! BYC has successfully won and defended The Canada's Cup (One of the finest match race challenge rivalries in North America.) We match race at every level, our membership includes America's Cup and Olympic sailors, and we are known to be one of the friendliest clubs in the land. We host the longest consecutively run fresh water races in the word; The Bayview to Mackinac Race for 96 years and going."
League director Eberhard Magg commented "The newly announced schedule for the Match Race Super League presents teams with a clearly defined pathway in worldwide match racing at world class level events. It will also bring greater exposure to our sponsors and partners being part of the Match Race Super League."
MRSL director Harald Thierer said: "It (the Detroit Cup) is one of the most coveted trophies in match racing, and a fantastic addition to the Match Race Super League, particularly as a new League event in the United States. On top of that we continuously work on adding the fifth continent to the MRSL schedule in the hopefully not too distant future"
