O'pen BIC Worlds Day 3: Perfect conditions on Manly Bay

by O'Pen BIC Media 2 Jan 2019 18:40 PST 31 December 2018 - 4 January 2019

We are back! After the New Year's Day rest day it was back to the serious stuff here in Manly Bay, Auckland, New Zealand, and Day 3 of competition to decide the 2019 Open BIC World Champions.

After two tricky days with light and fluky winds, Day 3 gave all the sailors a chance, with near-perfect conditions of 8 - 12 knots and sun. They were all so keen to get into the action that there were three general recalls on the day, but when it all settled down the Race Committee was able to run three more rounds of racing, to give the provisional standings a shake up and leave things finely balanced going into the final four races of the championships.

In the U13 fleet it's looking like a two-horse race for the title. Australia's Breanne Wadley continues to show her all round ability, holding her lead over local (NZL) hero Ted Houry. They are some distance ahead of the consistent Tiphaine Rideau from France, who is just in front of Japan's Saki Nukui, battling for the third podium spot.

In the U17 fleet, Italy's Davide Mulas still leads, but he's coming under increasing pressure from New Zealand's Josh Hyde, and one of the pre-championship favorites, Australia's Travis Wadley. Mulas's Italian team-mates Sirolli and Gostoli have slipped out of the top three and will have to work hard to climb back into contention.

No team race today means we are on schedule to complete the fleet racing at the Worlds and we're looking forward to some exciting racing to come as the championship reaches its climax.
