America's Cup: Aussie Ashby gets New Zealand Honour

Emirates Team New Zealand's skipper Glenn Ashby has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, in the New Year's Honours.

Ashby is an Australian citizen, and the award of a NZ Honour to a foreigner is rare, however has occurred several times previously in an America's Cup context.

Ashby's award was for services to sailing, recognising his leadership of the sailing crew of Emirates Team New Zealand in the 2017 America's Cup campaign culminating in the third Kiwi America's Cup victory on June 26, 2017. He also won his tenth World A-Cat Championship earlier this year.

Barbara Kendall, an Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medalist in Windsurfing has been elevated to a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, one level below the a Damehood in the New Zealand Honours system. Here elevation recognises the work she has undertaken with the International Olympic Committee and sport generally outside the sailing sphere.

Sir Stephen Tindall, the Board Chairman of Emirates Team New Zealand has been elevated to a Knight Grand Companion for his services to business, the community and the environment. Although the is best known overseas as Chairman and long time financial supporter of Emirates Team New Zealand. He is a former New Zealander of the Year and winner of the Blake medal along with his knighthood. He is the only New Zealander to receive all three awards. Sir Stephen along with his wife Lady Margaret are heavily involved in philanthropic activities via the Tindall Foundation which receives as its main source of income the dividends the pair have received from The Warehouse, one of New Zealand's most substantial retail companies, which Sir Stephen founded. He is also heavily involved in backing new business start ups and ventures including RocketLab.
