The 2018 Kona World Championships took place last month, from October 26th to the 31st at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center (CCSC). More than 100 competitors from 15 countries gathered in Florida for five straight days of competition. From ages 12 to 80, the event was multi-generational. Men, women and juniors sailed together with sails designated to their body weight, from Yellow for light to Orange for Heavy with Red, Blue and Green in between.

Travelling from the Toronto Windsurfing Club was Andrée Gauthier. Representing Canada among many others, this sailor came to show off her talents competing against some of the best in the world.

With a range of conditions during the week, some days were better than others. While the first day brought in high winds starting from 12 knots going up to 22 knots in the afternoon, Andrée set the pace for the week, finishing 12th in her first race.

Sailing consistently throughout the event to stay at the top of the women leaderboard, Andrée mentioned during the event; "It's a long regatta, and the conditions are super fun, but really hard too, so it's important to limit your mistakes out there!". Sticking to her own advice, this Canadian windsurfer held her own and finished 22nd overall earning first place on the podium.

The 2018 Kona World Championships had a great turnout, leaving many eager for next summer. Mark your calendars as the 2019 Kona Worlds will be taking place at the (Aug 15-18) Circolo Club Torbole in beautiful Lake Garda, Italy!

A shoutout goes to all the Canadian competitors that attended this event!
