Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta 2018 – Eight Bells

by Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia 21 Nov 2018 17:29 PST

It is with regret that Sail-World reports the death of Steve Lonie, a crewmember on board the Naut 40 ‘Lady Bubbly’ competing in the 2018 edition of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta.

Lonie collapsed during yesterday’s Penang Inshore Race. Weather conditions at the time were severe - a heavy squally was blanketing the race course off the northwest tip of Penang, substantially hampering attempts by two RIBs from the Royal Malaysian Marine Police to locate the boat. Given the sea state, a transfer to an emergency response vessel would have been impossible. Lady Bubbly crew administered CPR, and on arrival at Straits Quay Marina, ambulance crew provided emergency medical assistance before taking him to the Penang General Hospital where he later died.

“It is with great sadness that we have to communicate the passing of a great sailor and much-loved friend to the many participants over the years. He enjoyed this event immensely, in which he had been a regular participant for the last seven years,” said Jeff Harris, Regatta Chairman. “The Royal Selangor Yacht Club and RMSIR organisers and officials extend their deepest condolences to the sailor’s family and the fellow crew of Lady Bubbly.”
