Herreshoff 12½'s For Sale!
From time to time, generous owners donate their small yachts to us for use in our summer and after-school Sailing & Seamanship Programs. The past couple of years have seen a shift from exclusively vintage H12s to a mix of these and fiberglass boats which require less maintenance and are a bit more durable.
While we still use some vintage H12s in our programs, we have more than we can use or maintain. These boats are not part of the HMM collection , so we are offering four of them for sale. They range from ready-to-race to ready-to-restore. |
November 15: "Redd's Pond Boatworks: Story of the Dragon" by Doug Park
DRAGON is a near replica of the 1882 Herreshoff steam launch #94 recently donated to HMM and was built in 2017 by Redd's Pond Boatworks in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Featured in an article by Stan Grayson in Woodboat issue 261 there is nothing quite like it around today. Come for the historical design of this unique vessel and stay for the tale of how an original engine survived over a century to find its way back to sea again.

New Research & New Perspectives

By the end of the Civil War the US Navy had amassed over 450 ships and was one of the most technically advanced in the world. What followed was 25 years of neglect as the indebted nation looked to westward expansion and southern reconstruction. By 1885 only 39 ships remained and technical staffs had been decimated. It was into this environment that the Herreshoffs brought innovation that helped to create what at the time was called the "New Navy".
This is the story of the first four torpedo boats the Herreshoff Brothers delivered to the US Navy and also of some that were not built. More than an exposure of the technologies they offered, it explores the relationships between the Herreshoffs, key naval officials and the naval bureaucracy at large. The Story of RESOLUTE, BB25
We recently received a generous donation from Jonathan and Margaret Harvey of Albany, New York. RESOLUTE is a beautiful Buzzard's Bay 25 that will join our education fleet in the spring of 2019. We spoke with him to discuss how RESOLUTE came into his life. Click Here to read the full interview.
..." Conditions were RESOLUTE weather, flat, 10-13 knots of breeze and a light rain. We used the #1 Doyle jib, took the lead early on and never relinquished it. No boat caught us, although it was a bit close at the finish. With the board up on the reaching legs, RESOLUTE accelerated and seemed to be telling us to just "let her run". I kept a light hand on the tiller and she loped along the following seas with very little commotion. It was a triangle course up to Newcomb's Ledge, then to the next mark, twice around, finish at the head of Marblehead Harbor. It was a bit nerve wracking at the end, and sweet relief to get the gun with the whole fleet pounding on our back door (18 miles)."... Click here to read more. |

An important part of the museum's collection related to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company and Herreshoff family are the original business and private correspondence, and other manuscript materials, originating with, or relating to, John Brown Herreshoff.
These materials can be divided into four elements:
- The largest collection of personal materials, and the subject of this Log, are the 41 envelopes each containing a letter or telegram John sent to his fiancée Sarah (Sadie) Kilton over the five months (May 5, 1870 to Oct. 3, 1870) immediately preceding their Oct. 7, 1870 wedding. The correspondence envelopes were individually numbered by Sadie in ink from 1 to 41. (Envelope #11 is empty.) John dictated the letters to a secretary while traveling or to a family member when at home in Bristol. The scribe's initials are recorded. Many letters are difficult to read, and this Log is based on transcripts made by archivist Norene Rickson. [...]
- Newspaper scrapbooks of news clippings covering John's business and sailboat racing activities over the years 1853 to 1890.
- Nineteen letters between John and his daughter Katherine Kilton Herreshoff over the six months from April- September 1885.
- In addition, the museum has a collection of miscellaneous business letters of John Brown Herreshoff received from various donors; this is being cataloged.
