Background:
Following their Dinghy Show talks, in May we broadcast a webinar covering Liz Rushall's and Mark Jardine's respective talks. These considered the future of dinghy sailing and some recommendations for the dinghy industry to implement.
Subsequently we have received numerous requests to further explore some of the recommendations in more detail. This winter we are planning a series of webinars, to address some key topics and questions arising in the initial webinar.
The trends indicate younger generations moving away from 'ownership' (e.g. of houses, cars) and towards 'experiences'. Plus that Millennials are less concerned with owning material things and more likely to pay for experiences, without the requirement to own it or commit long-term.
This creates challenges for traditional sailing club model which typically revolves around membership and owning equipment (e.g. boats). A number of clubs (and commercial organisations) are already experimenting with new forms of accessing sailing and 'pay on demand' boating, with varying successes.
The last 10 years has seen a huge increase in digital communication and engagement through smart phones, alongside the significant decrease in boating participation in the 18 – 34 age group. Digital offers many opportunities. There has never been a better time for clubs to start experimenting with alternative models for boating participation.
