420 Inland Championship at Rutland Sailing Club

by Jennie Clark 21 Oct 2018 11:26 PDT 20-21 October 2018

The 420 class spent the weekend of 20 and 21 October at Rutland SC for the re-run of their 2018 Inland Championship, which was postponed from a very windy weekend in the spring.

With sparkling sunshine greeting competitors the light wind was something of a surprise for the fleet, who seem to have spent just about every event over the last year battling against strong winds.

Sharing the meeting with the Hornet, Contender and Osprey fleets, racing got underway promptly at 12 noon with a course set down near the dam to make the best of the wind and marginal planing conditions. Bertie Fisher/Charlie Bacon took line honours in race 1, followed home by Jack Lewis/Fraser Hemmings and Issie Wallwork/Ellie Driver.

Race 2 saw Lewis/Hemmings take first place with Megan Ferguson and Bettine Harris in second place. Third place went to Haydn Sewell and William Heathcote. Lewis/Hemmings retained the lead for race 3, followed home by Fisher and Bacon with Eleanor Keers and Faye Chatterton moving up the score sheet with a 3rd place.

Day one ended with Lewis/Hemmings leading, Fisher/Bacon in second place and Ferguson/Harris in third place. With two more races scheduled for Sunday the fleet settled down to enjoy some time off the water together with a Hippy themed social.

Sunday was another good day for racing, and race four got underway promptly at 10.30. Lewis/Hemmings bagged another first with Ferguson/Harris in second and Sewell/Heathcote in third place. The final race saw Ferguson/Harris once again in second with Sewell/Heathcote taking line honours and Lewis/Hemmings in third, which became their discard.

A great weekend for the class, and well done to Jack and Fraser who become the 2018 Inland Champions.

Sailors are now looking forward to the End of Season Championships at Grafham Water SC on 17/18 November, with a weekend of open coaching at Grafham Water the weekend before that.
