F18 World Championship at Sarasota Sailing Squadron - Day 2

by Ellinor Walters 17 Oct 2018 01:32 PDT 12-19 October 2018

The F18 World Championship continued on Tuesday with an early start for competitors, due to varying condition on Sarasota Bay. The fleet's first race began at 10 am EST instead of the typical 11 am EST start.

Mitch Booth, 1992 Australian Yachtsman of the Year and 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist, and crew Rueben Booth won the first race of the day, dethroning the former leaders Puttnam and Burvill. The top ten contenders shuffled the leaderboard throughout the day, proving this event to be a hot match in Sarasota.

Ultimately the Greek team of Iordanis Paschalidis and Konstantinos Trigonis prevailed, taking first the following two races of the day and establishing a several minute lead in the final race of the day. Visit Regatta Network for full official score report.

Trigonis said of the venue, "I think this venue is tricky, from the outside it look easy but on the course it is really hard work. We were looking and got a puff at the top of the course and it took us all the way down to the finish."

"This event was our target regatta this year, we won the European Championship, so we came well prepared. We are trying to be consistent, reading the wind on the course and the water." said Paschalidis, "There are a number of boats that could win at this point, so it's still a long way to the finish.

With three days of racing to go and a variety of conditions on the course, this event is testing every facet of competitor's skills.
