US Sailing Education Zone to appear at Extreme Sailing Series San Diego

by US Sailing 11 Oct 2018 06:31 PDT 18-21 October 2018

The Extreme Sailing Series™ will return to San Diego for the second consecutive year on October 18-21 and the US Sailing Education Zone will be a featured attraction for attendees again.

The Port of San Diego and the San Diego Tourism Marketing District are serving as host venue partners for the San Diego Act, which will take place on Harbor Island featuring food trucks, craft beer gardens, live music, family-friendly activities and much more. Boasting an original "stadium-style" racing circuit designed for spectators, the Extreme Sailing Series™ is free to the public and includes a mix of unique on-the-water entertainment and numerous on-shore activities.

The US Sailing Education Zone will provide fun learning activities for people of all ages as part of the US Sailing Reach Initiative for STEM education and sport outreach. Through interactive and hands-on activities, event attendees will have the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the sport of sailing and sustainability. The Education Zone will be open October 18-21, hours change daily and are posted on the event website.

US Sailing is organizing a number of regional and national sustainability and education partners to create a fun learning environment for everyone. The Reach Simple Machine Scavenger Hunt, supported by Harken, is a special opportunity for the hundreds of participating youth to connect science and sailing through mechanical advantage by exploring the association between six simple machines: wheel and axel, lever, pulley, screw, wedge and inclined plane.

They can also try their hand at navigating to different parts of the race village while learning ways they can be more environmentally friendly in the Sustainability Navigation Challenge.

Other activities in the Education Zone include learning about airfoils, creating your own sail for a small boat and racing it, ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), watershed models, water filtration, marine debris games, coastal bingo, mosquito investigations, and much more.

Participating organizations include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center, Sailors for the Sea, Fleet Science Center, Elementary Institute of Science, San Diego Resource Conservation District, USS Midway Museum, Water4life, San Diego Vector Control, San Diego Coastkeeper, Maritime Museum of San Diego, and Living Coast Discovery Center.
