Just nine days after the thoroughly unwelcome visit of super typhoon Mangkhut, 60+ boats turned out for the rescheduled season-opening Autumn Regatta which took place on Tuesday during the Mid-Autumn Festival public holiday.
The conditions were absolutely ideal, with blue skies and an easterly breeze of 10 to 15kts and building. 11 divisions raced in Victoria Harbour today, including big boats, Dragons, Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Impalas, J/80s, Pandoras, Ruffians and Sportsboats.
All classes took part in two races with the start off of Hung Hom followed by a beat up the harbour to Tai Koo Shing or Junk Bay for the Big Boat Division 1. Once around the their marks the fleets hoisted their kites and headed back to Kowloon Bay and after doing their respective courses crossed the line off of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
In the second race, conditions proved choppy thanks to the outgoing tide and a breeze in an opposite direction, giving some of the smaller fleets a hard time.
In the end, Simon Wong’s A35 Dexter II took the win in IRC Division 1. In the Etchells fleet Nick Burns’ Gunga Din took two firsts from two races (hard to beat!), with RHKYC Commodore John Woo on board. “It was a lot of hard work, and I’m sure I’m going to feel the pain tomorrow, but it was a great day on the water!”
In closing, increased debris in the water after the typhoon reminds many sailors of the impact single use plastic has on the environment. RHKYC hopes that this can act as reminder to keep our oceans clean for all. The Club itself already stopped providing single use plastic water bottles, bags and straws in 2016.
