Light airs welcomed the sailors at Sheboygen Yacht Club on day 3 of racing at the 2018 Para World Championships. The postponement flag was hoisted as race management committed to a delayed start, allowing a couple of hours to let the breeze fill in.
The breeze began to fill in and the first race in the knock out series was started in light pressure which made the racing pretty tricky. The day 3 format would see the days winner advance to the final, with the last boat going home. Six races were scheduled, each boat would sit out one race so there were only five RS Ventures racing at any one time.
Gian Bachisio Pira/Gianluca Raggi – ITA 1 and Will Street/Jonny Currell – GBR 2 had a very consistent day winning all the races between them and when the boats came ashore they were first and second place respectively. Jonny wasted no time completing a protest form for an incident in the first race of the day which would lead to ITA 1 being DSQ from that race. The adjustment to the results would see Will/Jonny advance to the final and Gian/Gianlua needing to sail the day 4 knock out rounds to try and claim the last place in the final.
Enrique Vives/Gabriel Barroso de Maria – ESP 1 displayed great upwind pace as they continue to improve throughout the regatta. They finished the day in third place and they must be confident that they are in the mix for the last spot in the final. USA 1 and SUI 1 finished fourth and fifth, so they will live to fight in the final day of knock out tomorrow.
Shinya Yamamoto/Rie Ariyoshi – JAP 1 were struggling in the tricky light conditions. They finished last on the day which sadly made them the first boat to be eliminated from the regatta. Shinya and Rie have not stopped smiling throughout the event and we look forward to welcoming them back in Spain for the 2019 Worlds.
As the event moves toward the business end of the regatta, it is clear that the fun and laughter in the dinghy park has only grown as the sailors have got to know each other. It seems that there is never a dull moment at a Para event and for all involved, it is a privilege to be a part of the event.
