The 2018 Melges 20 World League, European Division will conclude its season this coming weekend with its final act in Cagliari, Italy.
The challenge is set on the regatta field of Yacht Club Cagliari, gracious host of a very busy racing season and series of regattas, in particular the World Championships for the Melges 32 and the Melges 20 in October.
The current Melges 20 World League, Euro Division Ranking after four events completed will unequivocally pave a sprint to the finish with at least three top teams aiming for the title. Vladimir Prosikhin's NIKA with Michele Ivaldi as tactician, maintains a high performance level giving him a distinct points advantage over Achille Onorato's Mascalzone Latino Jr. in second, followed by Igor Rytov's Russian Bogatyrs in third, while Alexandr Ezhkov's Pirogovo and Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo round out the top five.
The final stage in Cagliari however has double value, and it will reveal a probable cast of characters, one of which most likely may end up with the Class' most prestigious title of all, that of World Champion. The event is scheduled for October 10-13.
Inevitably, all eyes will be focused this weekend on reigning World Champion Drew Freides at the helm of Pacific Yankee, flanked by Morgan Reeser. Also, there is Onorato with Nathan Wilmot as tactician. Either one of these aspiring teams could be among those to take the next crown.
The Melges World League is supported by Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, North Sails, Toremar, Lavazza, Rigoni di Asiago and Melges Europe
Melges World League has signed and adopts the code of ethics of the Charta Smerarlda strongly promoting the values of One Ocean Foundation.
