RS200 National Championship at the RS Games - Day 4

by RS Association 24 Aug 2018 08:45 PDT 20-24 August 2018

Following the infamous 200 fancy dress, mixed with the 500 class' international party, there were more than a few sore heads in the boat park. But more of an issue for the reporter was the lack of crew.

D flag was raised and there wasn't quite the normal rush to launch. Sailing out to the bay allowed everyone to finish getting kit on etc.

Once out in the bay the breeze started in the WNW at 15 knots. Racing was underway on time. Unfortunately up the first beat there was a huge left shift meaning PRO Peter Saxton had no choice but to abandon. The next gate start was recalled and another shift took the wind to the SW with the sun now out and the breeze picking up this would provide textbook champagne conditions for the 200 class.

The first race was dominated by Cam Stewart and Tom Harrison from start to finish. The roaming reporters found the first downwind interesting with a slight lack of balance in a gybe nearly causing a swim.

The second race was started promptly after the second and another increase in breeze resulting in awesome downwind conditions. The series leaders Maria Stanley and Rob Henderson choose to stamp their authority on the fleet showing the fleet a clear pair of heels as they extended on every leg of the race. Another superb decision from the race officer meant we finished the second race 100m from the harbour entrance making the sail in far shorter.

A brilliant day's sailing in sun, waves and cracking wind. 200 sailing doesn't get much better than this.
