Tummel Week 2018 at Loch Tummel Sailing Club

I think the Summer of 2018 will be remembered by us all thanks to the amazing weather, but I am pretty sure Tummel Week 2018 will be remembered by all who took part also. With 97 entries, sunshine, all races sailed and a full programme of activities and social events the atmosphere at the club was fantastic all week.
The week started with Steak Pie Supper on Sunday night to get us all set up for the week ahead. Our young sailors, lead by Jo Foster, then looked at the weather forecast and produced their first daily weather poster of the week.
After the first race on Monday morning the fleet was split into three. From Optimists to a Moth, and the whole range of ages, the racing was excellent. The race officers for each race provided us with a fantastic range of courses, lots of trips to A and F! Many of the youngsters spent the evening building model boats with Andy Beskaby to be raced America's Cup style during the week. These boats were fantastic, Team Solo built by Ben Clarke and raced by a very fast Panda won the challenge.
Tuesday afternoon saw the faster boats heading to the Island. The wind at the bottom end of the loch was much stronger and saw the Moth and 29ers speeding around the Island first. The racing was very tight with constant changes in position. The first two Flying Fifteens finished with seven seconds between them after racing an hour and 20 minutes. Well done to Mike and Fiona Barron for keeping their lead.
As it was, Total Wipe Out Tuesday saw over 30 excited individuals, adults and children alike get into teams and race their way around the course – swimming from the jetty, round the sandpit, up the slope jumping over the barrels rolled at them, round and round the pole before making their way down the slip and slide at high speed, straight onto the ladder then under the benches where multiple buckets of water were thrown at them. Well done to Team Destructor for the win.
The BBQ on Tuesday night was well attended as was the Quiz. The Harry Potter round saw a good split from the teams with full marks from one team and another with a score of zero. Thanks to Nicky Scott for the superb questions and congratulations to Team Steven Says... (Steven, Daniel, Scott, David, Gavin, Denise and Graham) for their win.
A non-series race was run at the club on Wednesday morning for those wishing to race. Congratulations to David Sword both for winning the race and giving us some entertainment by capsizing at the end of the jetty! Others took to the hills for the group walk. This year from Pitlochry to Grandtully concluding with lunch at the Inn on the Tay. The evening ended with an outdoor disco with the lights projected onto an RS200 sail. Once again the older you were, the later you managed to stay up.
Thursday saw another three races in glorious sunshine. Between races the international judge, Sally Stewart, flown in especially from Australia, assisted by Lynda Spencer scored the best dressed tents and boats. After a cup of tea to relieve the shock of the budgie smuggler display outside Ben and Jo Barron's tent they declared Sophie and Hannah Taylor the winner. So that no one missed out in taking part, there was a little stall where members sold decorations with the proceeds going to the RNLI. Thursday was the day for paddle board racing, I am very pleased and smug to report Team Angie – Andrew Homer, Peter Foster, Dan Clarke and Noah Di Paolo won.
We sailed two races on the Friday. The final activity of the week, another Tummel week favourite, was the board walk with the longest ever string of nine boards. The Top Girl prize went to Isla Mucklow for her speed and staying on her feet for most of the way and all of this in a woolly hat. The Top Boy was Dan Clarke who again managed to walk rather than run. The Top Adult went to David Logan for his 'running on air!'. Straight after we had the prize giving for the activities as there were many to give out along with thanks to Jo Foster, Andy Beskaby, Mark Barron and Bess Homer for running activities and races for youngsters starting out in racing. The Haribo medals once again went down a treat.
The week concluded with the main prize giving and a final meal, delicious curry!
