20-28 July 2018
It's Lay Day during the Flying Dutchman World Championship. Time to look back on the first three racing days. After a light, but steady start on Day 1 the wind started to play hide and seek on Day 2. It was quite a tough day, especially for everybody's patience. One race was started in the morning, but was abandoned at the end of the triangle due to failing wind.
After a lot of waiting and a few failed start attempts suddenly the afternoon sea breeze came and Race 3 could be sailed. The wind was a little bit more than Day 1, with all crews able to go full in the trapeze. Another race was started, but unfortunately just before the finish the race was abandoned due to a huge wind shift. A long day on the water for everybody, but in the end it was worth it.
Because there was only one race on Day 2, the Race Committee scheduled three races for Day 3. The morning race was sailed with the same conditions as the day before; light wind and short waves, which made it quite difficult to get some speed. During the second race the wind picked up and the third race really put a smile on everybody's face. Finally some more wind!
DEN-21 Jørgen and Jacob Bojsen-Møller had the best day of all the top teams, with a tenth place and two first places. The HUN-70 Szabolcs Majthényi and Andras Domokos are following in second place and the ITA-4 Nicola and Francesco Vespasiani jumped the list to third place.
With four race wins under their belt the Danish team has the best chances of becoming World Champion at the end of the week. The Hungarian team has shown before they can successfully come back during a championship, though. The last three races on Friday and Saturday will eventually prove who is really the fastest.
With a completely sunny week so far all the sailors are really enjoying the championship. After a well-deserved Lay Day everybody will be keen to go out on the water once more the next two days. The weather forecast predicts a bit more wind for the coming days, so that should make things interesting.
