Fleet Trophy Races at Ripon Sailing Club

Sunny weather and some very energetic marketing of the event by our Fleet Captains saw a huge turnout for the one day 'Fleet Trophy' races on Sunday 1st July.
The large turn out by each club class resulted in very few boats being slotted into the 'Wakeman' trophy fleet – this being for any class with less than three boats competing and ending up comprising a Phantom, a Supernova and an RS Feva. It is a sign of the strength of the established club fleets that this fleet was the smallest of all.
Race Officer Mark Cade, ably assisted by Sarah Milner, Ali Hampshire and John Southall, wisely waited for the wind to fill in and got the first race off just before 11.30am. The start sequence, with so many fleets racing, was lengthy but it gave the spectators a great view of the 51 boats heading down the lake in batches. The coloured sails of the 2 largest fleets – Enterprises and Mirrors – looked particularly pretty in the bright sunshine.
Two more races were held after lunch, with some really good competition seen in all the fleets and with bursts of wind which kept everyone well and truly on their toes!
Hard work behind the scenes meant we had a number of new and young members out sailing, enjoying racing for the first time with a number of juniors crewing for more experienced Youth/Junior helms in the growing Mirror fleet. Lots of new faces will be getting glassware at the Annual Prizegiving as a result!
