The RRD One Hour Classic, the most historic regatta organized by the Circolo Surf Torbole, has started and for the first time also extended to the new Foil category. A first start was given to the slalom category for the RRD One Hour Classic, but the 130 competitors were stopped because the wind dropped below the minimum limits.
So the foilers at Circolo Surf Torbole, for the first time in history, twelve competitors are taking part in a regatta on Trentino Garda Lake lasting one hour, on FOIL boards.
"It was a fun and the race was fought between me and the Polish sailor Maciek Rutkowski; unfortunately I chose the wrong foil and when the wind dropped down I was losing ground, while when the pressure increased, I approached my opponent. During the last lap I had overtaken him, but then entered the area with less wind which disadvantaged me again.", says the 2016 PWA Slalom World Champion and current PWA Slalom World Tour leader Matteo Iachino who signed both for the RRD One Hour Classic and RRD One Hour Foil.
"From a competitive point of view, it was very exciting to see the continuous place changing between Iachino and Rutkowski. This year, the choice to extend the event to the foil category was to allow competition in lighter wind conditions and it has been successful", stated Armando Bronzetti, President of the Circolo Surf Torbole. "It was also unique to attend the first foil regatta on Garda Trentino in an atmosphere of absolute silence, since the boards, rising on foils, have no impact on the water and do not produce any noise. Noteworthy also are the six countries for the Foil category and 121 competitors for the RRD ONE HOUR CLASSIC representing 15 countries. We hope in the wind to compete a nice "hour", which allows everyone to race and maybe to best the slalom record."
The ranking of the first FOIL race was therefore won by the Polish Maciek Rutkowski who finished 14 legs in 1h08m28s, followed by Matteo Iachino. Third place went to the German sailor Malte Reuscher, with 13 legs in 1h00m55s.
