Golden Globe Race appoints GAC Pindar as Official Logistics Supplier

The Golden Globe solo non-stop round the world Race will start from Les Sables d'Olonne France on 1st July and the yachts will return to the same port in March / April 2019. The route takes the fleet through three gates close to Marina Rubicon in the Cana © GGR / PPL

Fresh from the successful conclusion of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, GAC Pindar is ready for its next challenge as the official logistics provider for the Golden Globe Race which sets off on Sunday (1 July) from Les Sables d’Olonnes in France.

The race marks 50 years from the day nine men set off on the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race: sailing alone and unaided by today’s sailing technology. It took 312 days for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston to complete his global circumnavigation and win the £5,000 prize money. Sir Robin will be at the starting point in Les Sables d’Olonne to see the 18 sailors set off in yachts similar to those used in 1968 and navigating using only the equipment such as sextants, paper charters, wind-up chronometers and barometers, that were available to their predecessors half a century ago.

Throughout the race around the world, GAC Pindar will be on stand-by, ready to swing into action and provide logistics services anywhere in the world if needed.

Golden Globe Race event organiser Don McIntyre says: “The knowledge that GAC Pindar are there to assist the competitors if required will inevitably help the sailor’s mental preparations and is of great benefit to us as event organisers. While we will be monitoring the sailors 24 hours a day it is added value to have GAC Pindar’s own monitoring service in action in the background.”

GAC Pindar Partner and Principal Andrew Pindar adds: “When attempting a challenging ocean passage, it’s important to know you have a solid back up team should problems arise; for many sailors this comes in the form of a professional shore team but for those who don’t have this, GAC Pindar can fill that gap. We have the experience and expertise needed to run sailing campaigns, manage race yachts and provide event logistics and we are delighted to extend these services to each of the 18 brave competitors starting the Golden Globe Race this Sunday.

“It is refreshing to see so many individuals take up this ‘back-to-basics’ yacht racing challenge. We wish them all success and assure them that we will be right there for them should they need our assistance.”
