The America's Cup gets a makeover from Garrads

Almost one year since Emirates Team New Zealand won the Americas Cup and newly appointed America's Cup broadcaster, TVNZ's prime time program Seven Sharp, learnt a few things about the 'Auld Mug' at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) on Monday.

For those not fully up with the play - the America's Cup has a few issues.

Firstly when it was last at RNZYS the Cup was attacked by a protestor, who was able to just walk into the Squadron, and take to the Cup with a hammer, damaging it severely. The damaged Cup was sent back London and its maker Garrad & Co for repair, two pieces were cut from the trophy, which became known as the "America's Cup Pieces". They are now being incorporated in a permanent way into the trophy. (And thanks to a generous donor the America's Cup is now contained in a fully secure, fully alarmed trophy cabinet at RNZYS in Westhaven.

In recent Cups the winners have followed the tradition of engraving the results of each race sailed in the Match, but there has been some font-creep as some perceived their wins were more important than others. The 2013 monster of 19 races soaked up more than its share of space and a couple of others decided that their results deserved to be in a bigger font than the predecessors. The plan is to replace the bottom plinth on the Cup with a new blank piece, and reproduce the results in the standard form and font.

For Duncan Johnston's take on the story for stuff.co.nz
