The "breakaways": The first five home to Bermuda

by Nic Douglass 18 Jun 2018 15:42 PDT 18 June 2018

The adventures continue for the Sailor Girl in Bermuda for the finish of the 51st edition of the Newport Bermuda Race.

Leaving most of the fleet far behind in light winds, George David's Rambler 88 crossed the finish line off St. David's Lighthouse at 5:51:51 Eastern daylight time on Sunday evening.

The first pack consisting of five boats including Rambler 88 managed to get through the high pressure system that is now keeping the majority of the fleet at bay, making the Dark & Stormy's taste even sweeter. If you have a chance to check out the Pantaenius Yacht Insurance tracker, you will see the giant "raft up" that is the majority of the fleet just south of the Gulf Stream.

Highlights from a big "all-nighter" as we say in the business were seeing Rambler as they ripped into St. David's from on the water, congratulating the Askew brothers and the Wizard crew on their great run down and "match race" with Warrior, and seeing Elvis on the dock this morning; a historic moment for the first winning multihull in their inaugural year.

Below we have live coverage with Rambler 88 as they sailed their final nautical miles into the finish, and then live on the dock interviews with George David owner of Rambler 88, Steve Murray Jnr skipper of Warrior, Pete & Dave Askew owners of Wizard (current leaders in DHL15), Stu Bannatyne from Proteus ahead of his return to the Volvo, and with Allistair from Elvis.

Plenty more to come from Bermuda - but now, after over 24 hours on the go, it's time for this little Sailor Girl to go off watch!
