Get out and sail: Your weekly crewing update from MySail
by Deborah Dalziel, MySail Team 6 Jun 2018 16:41 PDT
The Sydney to Noumea Yacht Race is on and the prediction is that the 25-year old race record will be beaten by one of the forerunners in the race to New Caledonia. Currently, Ker 46 Patrice is leading the race while Mick Martin's TP52 Frantic is in second place. Patrice is anticipated to finish the 1,064nm race on June 7 around 11pm which beats Farr 65 Brindabella's previous record of five days and 21 hours.
Unfavourable weather due to a low-pressure system and threat of collision with 83 shipping containers that fell into the water north of Sydney shortly before the race start gave the sailors quite a challenge at the beginning of the race. After the start was postponed by almost 24 hours due to the weather, the fleet finally got away. Two yachts had to pull out in the first night – one due to a de-masting – but fortunately most yachts were able to stay in the game.
