PA Consulting RS Feva Nationals at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy - Day 2

by Jon Partridge 28 May 2018 03:00 PDT 26-29 May 2018

PRO Ian Bullock decided that the boats would launch on time and he would make use of whatever wind came his way. And as luck would have it, whilst there was no wind in certain areas of the harbour and offshore, the race course area appeared to have its own micro climate and three races were sailed in light but relatively stable winds.

Getting the nose of the boat in front and picking the right side of the first beat was absolutely key and the team of the day were Sophie Johnson (Blackwater Sailing Cub) and Dylan Collingbourne (Burnham Sailing Club) who mastered the light winds and posted 2, 2, 1 to haul themselves right into contention in 5th place.

The day one overnight leaders, Dutch pairing of Luuk de Wijn and Sjoerd de Wijn, had a slightly less consistent day and dropped to 2nd overall after day two, first place being taken by William Pank and Sebastian Gotto who continued their consistent sailing with 1, 2 and 7.

First Ladies, and with some fantastically consistent sailing over two days, are Sophie Dennis and Olivia Bracey-Davis lying in 7th place, first family are William and Becky Caiger who scored a day two bullet to leave them in 10th place and first mixed crew are Ben Hutton-Penman and Abi Jayasekara in 3rd.

The fleet is now split into Gold and Silver and each sailor carries their qualifying scores into the final six races. The top ten has been incredibly close during qualifying, the top six teams all have a net score after five counting races of less than 20 points and four teams scored 17 points.

All is to play for however we certainly need the wind to help on day three as conditions once again look very light.
