The Sunfish® Class is part of the first ever sailing regatta to take place in the landlocked country of Bolivia. The sailing program of the XI South American Games, a regional Olympic-style event held every four year, includes five events on its 2018 edition: Mixed Snipe, Men's Laser, Women's Laser Radial, Men's Sunfish®, and Women's Sunfish®.
The Men's Sunfish® division was scheduled to be the class to hit the race course at Corani Lake, located 9,200 feet above sea level. Six sailors from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela found challenging gusty winds in the upper teens and 40F windchill.
Former World Champion Jonathan Martinetti from Ecuador leads Day 1 after 3 races with 5 points, followed by newly crowned two-time South American Champion Jean Paul de Trazegnies from Peru with 7 points, while Chile's Francisco Ducasse sits on third with 8 points. A total of nine races are scheduled for this 3-day event, which concludes on Monday May 28. The Women's Sunfish® division will start on May 29 after the completion of the men's event.
