The Spring weather arrived just in time for the 2018 American Yacht Club Spring Series Regatta. Nearly 70 boats from the entire northeast set sail from Milton Point for the first weekend of racing.
Historically, Spring Series has symbolized the transition from Frostbiting to Spring Sailing at American Yacht Club. This year the regatta is hosting eight separate boat classes, the two largest being the J/105 Class and the J/70 Class, over two weekends of racing.
On Saturday, the morning fog drifted away into sunshine as boats left the harbour. The wind ranged from three to five knots with gusts at approximately eight to 10 knots. This was an exciting day for the AYC Race Committee as both seasoned veterans and newcomers joined together to kick off the Spring Regatta season.
On the East Course, "Maxine" helmed by Past Commodore Bill Ketcham, had a strong start winning two of the three races in the J/44 Division. On the South Course, "Escape" skippered by Elizabeth Barry had a successful day finishing first in all three races in the J/88 Division. Both the East Course and the South Course were able to get in three races to wrap up the first day of sailing.
On Sunday, the wind picked up ranging from 13 to 17 knots with gusts close to 20 knots. Clouds covered the morning sky with sunshine finally breaking through in the early afternoon. On the East Course, "Blazer" helmed by Christopher Culver finished the weekend off strong placing first in all three races in the IRC Division. "Maxine" maintained it's lead in the J/44 Division, finishing second, first, and fifth place, respectively.
On the South Course, "Zig Zag" owned by Bengt & Marie Johansson won the first two races and finished third in the final race of the J/109 Division. In the J/88 Division, "Escape" maintained its lead, while "Wings" skippered by Past Commodore Mike Bruno continued to gain ground.
After two days of racing, the competition in the J/105 Division is fierce, with "loulou" in first place, and three boats, "Conundrum," "Young American," and "Revelation," all neck to neck behind them. One of the compelling story lines of this regatta has been the endurance of "Young American Sailing Academy" skippered by Maddy Ploch and "Let it Rip" skippered by Maddy Saffer. Both boats mainly consist of a crew below the age of 18. "Young American" won its first race on Saturday and finished the weekend third in the J/105 Division. "Let it Rip" finished first in its last race of Sunday and is in the middle of the pack of the J/70 Division.
Supporting Sponsor, The Hinckley Company, was on the water in "Scout," a Hinckley Picnic Boat, each day spectating the races on both courses.
Both days of racing ended with barbecue and drinks on the picturesque American Yacht Club lawn. The first weekend of racing may be over, but spring racing has only just begun.
