RS Quest Victorian State Championship at the Black Rock Yacht Club Skiff Regatta

by Richard Furneaux 25 Apr 2018 16:37 AEST 21-22 April 2018

With over 65 RS Quests now sailing in Australia, the time was right to hold the first ever RS Quest Victorian State Championships at the Black Rock Yacht Club Skiff Regatta.

The boats have been bought by a number of clubs around Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne as training and development boats and it was great to see four clubs represented at the regatta.

Royal Brighton Yacht Yacht Club sent a flotilla of five boats that were towed to the event in the morning by one of their rescue boats. Two boats from Safety Beach Sailing Club, one from the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club plus two from the host club made for a colourful fleet of eleven boats.

There was a wide variety of age and experience across all the crews with a number of youngsters competing in their very first regatta with a more skilled helm guiding them along.

The racing at the front of the fleet was extremely tight in a mix of conditions from very light to moderate. Significant wind shifts made the racing quite testing but all competitors were finishing the races with broad smiles.

Honours, by just one point, went to Grace and Glenn Lazzar from the Safety Beach Club just edging out Tony Hennessy and Tamara Cole from Royal Brighton. Third and fourth was decided on a count back after Gordon Hyde from Black Rock crossed the line first in the last race but was unfortunately OCS at the start.

Everyone agreed that it was a great weekend and plans are already underway to continue the inter-club rivalry at another event.
