On Friday 23rd March Land Rover BAR completed their epic Sport Relief challenge; a 24-hour 'Grind-athon' and 12-hour supporters disco 'Spin-athon' hosted by Bestival Founder, Rob da Bank and Longplay's Tim Weeks and Sal Nidai at the team's HQ in Portsmouth.

Highlights:

  • Land Rover BAR's Tim Carter manned a grinding pedestal solo for 24 hrs, travelling 519 km and burning 19,326 calories
  • 60+ team members supported Tim with a 24-hour relay across two grinders
  • Four Royal Navy rugby players took on the 24-hour challenge in grinding shifts on the final grinding machine
  • One superstar DJ, Rob da Bank and two spin gurus, Tim Weeks and Sal Nidai got 607 participants active in a supporters disco 'Spin-athon'
Thank you to all our supporters including local businesses, schools, and sailing clubs and to the city of Portsmouth for getting involved and active for Sport Relief!

Challenge fact file:

Grinding:

  • The America's Cup is a design race and human power enables the boat to 'fly'
  • The grinders role on-board is the 'engine'; by grinding handles that power the winch and hydraulic system, the boats are able to lift up and out of the water on foils
  • During a 25-minute race a grinders heart rate is on average 164 bpm, with a max of 184 bpm
Disco Spin-athon
  • Longplay delivers secret 'MUSIC X WELLNESS' pop ups – one of which is a spin project called 'LOOP' – LIVE intimate DJ music sessions on bikes in secret locations.
  • LOOP Sessions began back at Bestival in 2015 as a pilot in a tractor shed... and have never looked back since.
  • The Disco Spin-athon is a special extended LOOP Session with Rob da Bank on the Decks.
