Nearly 255 years ago, Jeanne Baret, a French botanist, became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. Her journey started at the age of 26, when she disguised herself as a man.
However, it wasn't intentional. In fact, she didn't set out to become a pioneer at all. When she stepped onboard the Etoile, one of French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville's two ships that left for round-the-world expedition in 1766, she was only there to accompany Philibert Commerson, a well-known botanist, who was selected to be a part of Louis's journey around the world.
