Coast Guard Foundation announces 2018 Scholarship Opportunities

by Rus Graham 3 Feb 2018 18:14 AEDT

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that it has kicked off its 2018 scholarship season. Accepting applications from February 1 through March 15, children of enlisted Coast Guard members may apply for annual scholarships to fund undergraduate education ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Scholarships are available to children of enlisted Coast Guard members who are active duty, active duty reserve and retired.

All Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship applicants will use the online application hosted by the Coast Guard Foundation. All interested college-aged children of Coast Guard members should check eligibility guidelines online at coastguardfoundation.org/scholarships.

In 2017 the organization awarded a record 166 new scholarships. Combined with ten multi-year scholarship recipients and three Fallen Heroes Scholars, the Foundation is currently assisting 179 students with a half-million dollars in support per year. In the 27 years of this program, the Coast Guard Foundation has paid out more than $4.7 million to more than 780 college-aged young adults to help the families of Coast Guard members achieve their goals of higher education. The non-profit's commitment to education support has significantly grown over time and is now a primary focus of the organization.

"The brave men and women of the Coast Guard community work tirelessly to protect our way of life," said Susan Ludwig, president, Coast Guard Foundation. "Their success relies on having a focused frame of mind, which requires the background understanding that their family back home is being taken care of. We do what we can to help these families and providing scholarships is our core method of support. We are honoured to have been able to award a record 166 scholarships last year and look forward to continuing to expand the program again this year."

For more than 45 years, the Coast Guard Foundation has supported the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. The Foundation provides higher education support or scholarships to enlisted members, reservists, their spouses and their children. In addition, the Foundation provides higher education financial support for families of Coast Guard members lost in the line of duty and support for morale programs including funding recreation, exercise and family-oriented facilities.
