Sir Peter Blake Regatta gets underway

The annual Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta reached a record number of entries with over 450 boats entered into the event. The largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
Hosted by Torbay Sailing Club on the Hibiscus Coast north of Auckland, the event has attracted sailors from Samoa, Singapore, Australia and across New Zealand.
Considered a pinnacle event on the hectic racing schedule, the Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta is one that few sailors miss.
Mark Orams, who sailed with Sir Peter Blake in numerous campaigns including the Whitbred Round the World Race and America's Cup, said that, "Blakey would just be so happy to see this."
"The fact that there are hundreds of kids here about to compete in their first regatta is what would make Blakey so proud. Most of these kids weren't even born in Blakey's prime, so to see his legacy continue through the Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta is just inspiring," continued Orams.
The sailors began arriving at Torbay Sailing Club from as early as 5:30am on Saturday 3rd December to ensure they got a rigging spot and to set up camp for the next two days. Tent City was constructed overnight and the atmosphere is electrifying.
PRO Harrold Bennett addressed the sailors, supporters, coaches and families reminding them that everyone was here to have fun, and to experience something extraordinary.
"Have fun and sail fast!" said Bennett.
Racing is due to commence at 1100 hours, however a start on time was delayed due to an inconsistent breeze of around 4 knots.
"Don't leave the shore until D Flag has been lowered for your course," Bennett reminded the sailors.
At 10:30am, Bennett made the decision to postpone racing for all courses until further notice.
"Right now we are hanging out on shore for a while. We will monitor the situation and update everyone once we have some wind," said Bennett.
About 10 minutes after making the decision to postpone, the breeze finally started to fill across the course areas, so AP and D flag was lowered across the courses signalling permission for the fleets to head out to the water.
