Moth German Open Class Championship at Lake Walchensee

by Carlo Mage 17 Aug 2016 10:29 PDT 13-14 August 2016

A record 43 Moths took part in the International Moth German Open over the weekend on Lake Walchensee in Southern Germany. The first impressions for the foreign sailors on arrival was that the landscape compensates for the long journey.

The Walchensee showed its best side with the thermals winds enabling the Moths to complete the first 4 races on Saturday. The Italians Stefano Rizzi and Marco Lanulfi showed outstanding performance with their Exocets, while the best German, Maximilian Mäge was ranked in 4th overnight.

Sunday was identical to Saturday with Walchensee again at its best. A nearby thunderstorm threatened for a while but skirted past the lake Fresh winds of 12-18 knots made the sailors' hearts beat faster. The great conditions enabled more great races to be held. The results followed a similar pattern to Saturday; the Italians Rizzi ahead of Lanulfi and Petrino from Switzerland with Max Mäge in hot pursuit.

Stefano Rizzi (ITA) was confirmed as the event winner after 10 of the 12 races with Marco Lanulfi (ITA) in second. Adriano Petrino (SUI) completed the podium with Max Mäge one point behind in fourth and awarded the title of German National Champion.

The sailors were well looked after by the shore crew and after each day's sailing there was a tasty snack waiting for the tired helms. In the evening we had a barbecue and on the second night there was a sumptuous meal sponsored by Frankfurt Trust.

Lennon Racewear sponsored the event with race bibs for all and prizes. In the raffle, there was a Lennon Racewear Summer wetsuit. The winner Wolfgang Huber from Munich was able to take his winning prize directly at the prize giving.
