by International Melges 32 Class Association 4 Jun 2016 13:30 PDT 3-5 June 2016

Goransson collects lead In Talamone

The second day of racing at the 2016 Sailing Series® Melges 32 bring intense conditions and a slight change-up in the results

The Melges 32 racing excitement continued in Talamone today with an additional three races added to the scoreboard. Sweden's Richard Goransson and his Inga From Sweden team secured the overall lead with a very satisfying day on the water. With an 8-1-2 daily result, he solidified his top spot position carrying a four-point advantage.

Matteo Balestrero on Giogi remained strong moving up a spot for second, as did Lasse Petterson on Pippa to complete the top podium positions.

Race Four produced a pleasant 12-14 knots of breeze out of the southeast with Petterson taking charge early to lead the fleet around the track for a nice win, his second so far in Talamone. Valentin Zavadnikov on Team Synergy held off fellow Russian competitor Pavel Kutznetsov on Tavatuy for second place. Kutznetsov came third followed by Turkey's Ahmet Eker on Eker.

It was a very heated battle between Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino and Goransson in Race Five. Onorato lead about half of the race, before Goransson and his Inga team turned up the heat ultimately moving ahead on the last beat for a fast run to win. Zavadnikov and Kutznetsov had another great race placing third and fourth respectively, followed by Fritz Homann on Wilma in fifth.

Balestrero remained determined as he went on to grab an important win in the final race of the day, which also prompted a discard of each competing team's worst score. Goransson was hot on his heels to finish out the race in second, followed by Andrea LaCorte on Vitamina in third. Christian Schoerer aboard La Pericolosa had a great race to take fourth. Zavadnikov finished fifth maintaining his daily top-five winning streak.

Two final races are scheduled for Sunday.
