On Friday 16th, the races took place under wonderful sunshine, especially for this time of the year. The wind was light, building up to an established 6 knots around 3pm.
Switzerland, who were leading the competition yesterday, experienced some difficulties for the first race, crossing the line in fifth position. Ireland won both inshore races, which pulled them up to second place in the overall provisional ranking. The crew of Southampton, defender of the title, seized second place in the two races.
The third and last race of the day was the coastal race. Switzerland made a great return, taking a daring option. This bold move proved to be really smart, giving them an astonishing advance over the other teams. To quote a member of the Irish team back on shore, "At one point, they were so far ahead that we thought we were third, instead of fourth." Ireland finally managed to catch Cambridge, crossing the line in third position. Southampton secured second place for the third time of the day.
At the end of the day, four teams are starting to gain some advance in the provisional ranking. Switzerland is leading with 10 points, followed closely by Ireland on 13 points, Southampton on 15 points and Cambridge 16 on points. Canada, ranking fifth, is already at 33 points.
