Enterprise Open at Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club

Warm sun and a light breeze greeted the eight competitors at Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club, with visitors from as far afield as Japan, for their annual Enterprise open meeting which was held on Sunday 7th September.

Race 1 began just after 11oclock; Richard/Amelia Pryke (Ripon) won the start line and extended their lead towards the windward mark, with Mark Ninnim/Thea Armstrong (Bass) in 2nd and Steve Axford/Jane Preston (Yorkshire Ouse) in 3rd. Richard/Amelia Pryke held the lead to the finish, while places changed further down the fleet. By the final lap Steve Axford/Jane Preston had overtaken Mark Ninnim/Thea Armstrong, giving them 2nd place and Mark and Thea 3rd.

Race 2 began after a filling lunch, with 2 boats over the line and having to return, Richard/Amelia won the line with Dave Staniforth/George Panter (Ulley) closely behind, followed by Mark/Thea, and Steve/Jane. Richard/Amelia extended their lead whist places changed regularly throughout the rest of the fleet on the first beat, however Mark/Thea managed to pull through to 2nd, with Steve/Jane on their tails. Once round the windward mark positions stayed constant and finished this way. With Richard/Amelia securing the win, 2nd and 3rd place was all to play for in the final race.

After a slight course change race 3 was underway with Mark/Thea winning the line, followed by Richard/Amelia and Dave/George. After a tacking duel up to the windward mark, Richard/Amelia managed to round in 1st place, with Mark/Thea in 2nd and Steve/Jane in 3rd. On the downwind leg Mark/Thea caught Richard/Amelia up massively, but on the next lap Richard/Amelia managed to pull away, securing their lead. Places again remained constant for the remainder of the race meaning Richard & Amelia finished 1st, Mark & Thea 2nd and Steve & Jane 3rd. This secured a final 2nd place for Mark Ninnim & Thea Armstrong and a 3rd place for Steve Axford and Jane Preston.

After afternoon tea and cakes, the prize giving begun; Richard & Amelia Pryke retained the trophy for the 3rd year in a row, with a new trophy being presented to Amelia for 1st crew. Special prizes also included:

  • Furthest boat travelled: 23166, Mark Ninnim & Thea Armstrong (Bass SC)
  • First home boat: 20917, Steve Axford & Jane Preston (Yorkshire Ouse SC)
Richard Pryke made a short speech thanking the OOD, the ladies in the galley, the rescue boat and of course Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club for hosting. Also mentioned was the Ripon Sailing Club open meeting on October 4th. We hope to see you all there!
