30th Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse - Weekend 2 Day 3

by Isabelle Andrieux 8 Feb 2014 20:27 UTC 6-9 February 2014

No racing today

Having already confronted fairly wintery conditions on Friday, the 83 boats competing in this second weekend of the XXX Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse were not able to complete a race today in Hercules Bay. After several starts were given for the six series in competition (SB20, Longtze Premier, J/70, Melges 20, Platu 25 and Smeralda 888), the Yacht Club de Monaco Race Committee was forced to cancel all races in the interests of fair-play.

Totally unpredictable conditions saw the wind veering 90° within minutes and a squally weather front foiling any chance of a stable system filling in.

Lorenzo Bodini, sailing in the Melges 20 with class president Manfredi Vianini Tolomei on Maolca, welcomed the jury's decision: "The wind shifts were just too great to maintain a course. It would not have been fair to everyone to finish the races."

All was not lost however, as the Yacht Club welcomed all the teams back with a warming glass of mulled wine. And if the boats were not afloat, spirits were high and ready for some competition. A friendly tug-of-war went down a storm while others enjoyed the opportunity to support their teams in the Six Nations rugby, broadcast on a giant screen, and the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

A south-westerly is expected tomorrow for the last day of the Primo which begins at 10.00. Prize-giving is scheduled for 17.30 with crew members in the top three in each class receiving SLAM Advanced Technology Sportswear, and a lucky draw for all competitors to win a gold ingot donated by Credit Suisse (Monaco).

Programme:

Sunday 9th February
10.00am 1st race of the day for the SB20, Smeralda 888, J/70, Melges 20, Platu 25 and Longtze Premier classes
5.30pm Prize-giving
