30th Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse - Weekend 2 Day 2

by Isabelle Andrieux 7 Feb 2014 23:33 PST 6-9 February 2014

After an opening sally by the SB20s on Thursday, five more series (Longtze Premier, J/70, Platu 25, Smeralda 888 and Melges 20) joined the fleet on the water today for the second weekend of the XXX Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse.

Three races were successfully completed in difficult conditions, with a north-easterly touching 12 knots at its height in the day before fading. Like a metronome, the Yacht Club de Monaco's Race Committee fired off a string of starts, one after the other, with no respite for the 83 crews.

At the end of the day, and after a fairly spectacular final race, particularly round the second windward mark, a pattern is emerging in the provisional rankings.

In the SB20s, the best represented with 28 teams including four all-female crews, the Italian Ferdinando Battistella (Diva) retains his position at the head of the fleet in front of class President Ed Russo (Black Magic), assisted on tactics by Sébastien Col and Gilles Favennec.

In the Longtze Premier, the specialist in this class Nicolas Béranger (Beijaflore), supported by Bertrand Pacé, asserted his supremacy with two race wins and a second.

In the J/70s, Ludovic Sénéchal (Lulu La Nantaise) won three races, opening up the gap with the two Monegasque entries, Jacopo Carrain (Carpe Diem) and Roberto Tamburelli (YCM 2).

In the Platu 25s, the German armada had three boats in the top five with Stephen Molle (Grun) in the lead.

Adalberto Miani (Botta Dritta) was the most consistent in the Smeralda 888s with three 2nd places signalling his ambitions for the weekend, putting him ahead of Prince Charles de Bourbon-Sicile (Vamos mi Amor) and Blandine Medecin (Bear Essentials).

As for the Melges 20, regulars in Port Hercule since October, and competing in Act 4 of the Sportsboat Winter Series, they returned to their winter quarters today and saw the international class president, Manfredi Vianini Tolomei, dominate proceedings with a race win and two 2nd places.

Tomorrow the racing begins again at 10.00am.
