Streaker Open at South Yorkshire Sailing Club

by Ian Coldwell 10 May 2005 23:04 PDT 7 May 2005

A big contrast with last year’s fluky conditions. Strong winds made for exciting sailing with spectacular planing reaches for spectators and for the few sailors who were able to cope. For the rest the excitement was interspersed with regular capsizes. A long and busy day for the rescue boat crews who did a sterling job! The dam wall did good service as a back-stop for the ones that got away. Twelve boats were entered representing eight different clubs. Thanks to all who turned out.

First Race - All twelve boats were at the start line though they didn’t all manage to cross it! Soon more were upside down than were upright and within minutes the race was abandoned.

Helms tackled a Pie&Pea lunch with gusto trying to load extra ballast while hoping for the wind to calm down a little.

Second Race - Conditions unchanged and nine boats were at the start line. Despite some valliant performances only Nick Lovell and Ian Jones managed to finish. They were neck and neck in some hairy racing but Jones managed to hold on to a lead after Lovell suffered the almost inevitable capsize.

Discretion over-ruling valour, there was no third race.
